There are three University Clinical Units, the
Surgical formed in 1914, the Medical in 1923 and the
Obstetrical & Gynaecological in 1928.
The personnel of each Unit consists of a European Professor, Chinese, Indian, Malayan or Eurasian 1st and 2nd
Assistants appointed for three years with an extension of two years in special cases, and a House Officer and Clinical Assistant, both appointed for a period of six
months.
The primary object of the Units was to facilitate clinical teaching of medical students in the wards and out- patient departments and, in a lesser degree, to stimulate post-graduate teaching and clinical research.
The Surgical Unit has sixty-one beds (thirty-seven
for males, eighteen for females and six for children).
The Medical Unit has fifty-six beds (twenty each
for male and female and sixteen for children).
Both Surgical and Medical Units function at the
Queen Mary Hospital.
The Obstetrical and Gynaecological Unit has sixty
beds for obstetrical cases in the Tsan Yuk (Government)
Hospital and twenty-one beds for gynaecological cases in
the Queen Mary Hospital.
