this war is in practice impossible, you must, in joint action
with other peaceful nations like Great Britain, France and
Soviet Russia, help us to assert in the Orient those principles
for which you, as the oldest democracy on earth, have also
fought and died. I ask that you help us to win liberty,
freedom, and equality, and government of the people, by the
people, and for the people. I ask that you remember that it
is just for those sacred human rights that our youth today
pours out its war blood in defence of China's soil.
By conquering China Japan hopes to build a base for future
conquest of all lands of the Pacific and later of the whole
world. In helping us to fight this menace now you are helping
to save your own youth from future sacrifices on other
battlefields. Help China to help the interests of all free
peoples: The democratic forces of the world must be armed.
Help China to secure arms for her defence! The wounds of the
warriors of democracy must be bound and healed. Give us
medical supplies! Millions of our people have been driven
from their homes, to wander on a great migration to the
interior, rather than to submit to Japan. Help us to save
their lives! Give us money for relief work, money for
industry to re-employ our destitute refugees, credits for
machinery to rebuild our industries that have been destroyed
by bombs made of American scrap iron!
I ask you thus so frankly to give first because one
can be frank with youth and secondly because it is true
that we are in desperate need. Because youth today is also
realistic and practical I want, in the moment left to me, to
