The reason given for any alteration in the salary
scales was the Secretary of State for the Colonies'
wish that Hong Kong salaries should conform to those of
West Africa. ( see despatch from Bolonial Office to
Governor of Hong Kong, 12th. March 1936. ) As salaries
for women teachers in West Africa have always been much
higher than those in Hong Kong, it is difficult to
reconcile this with a large decrease in the salaries of
women teachers in Hong Kong.
The attached tables of salaries will show at a glance
the relative salaries paid to men and women in London on
the Burnham Scale, in Hong Kong on the old scale, on the scale adopted last year(1937), and on the scale now
proposed.
Also the Headmistress of the Girls' Secondary
School is paid less than the proportion laid down in the Burnham Scale For a headmistress as compared with a
headmaster.
