The numbers of men and women in the Education Dept.
The men still are approximately equal about 34 of each). have five super-scale posts, 2 inspectorships and 3 head-
ships. The women have only one, and now the four semi-
super-scale salaries of £750 have been abolished. This is
a very serious blow to the women who have been in the
service for many years, and have till now had the prospect
of getting one of these posts at £750 per annum.
Do you think it is possible to do anything to persuade
the Colonial Office to go very carefully into the matter of
the salaries of women teachers in Hong Kong before the
Secretary of State accepts the recommendations of the
Governor? We have done all we can do in Hong Kong, and
now our only hope rests with the authorities at the Colonial
Office, who, if all the facts are put before them, would
surely realise that the Hong Kong Government, instead of approaching English standards of fairness in the treatment
of women are retrograde.
I should like to bring the following facts to the
notice of the officials concerned. Exact figures and refer-
ences can be given in support of all the points.
