a survey of all connections in the area had been made. This

involved a considerable amount of work.

It would greatly facilitate the testing of the mains

and the control of the distribution system if all inside ser-

vices were connected to sub-mains or back lane pipes where

such exist. The estimated cost of transferring a connection

from a main to a sub-main is about $30.00, so that a consider-

able sum is involved. The actual number of connections affected

is at present unknown but a survey of all the old rider-main

areas is at present in hand, and the number of connections and

the total cost involved will be ascertained in due course.

The need for a larger and permanent staff for waste

detection work must again be stressed. Extra funds have been

requested in the 1938 Public Works Recurrent draft estimates and

are essential if the work is to be satisfactorily continued.

4.

An improved type of electrical amplifying stethoscope

has been ordered from home through the Crown Agents, and when

available should reduce considerably the time spent on the actual

location of leaks.

5.

The question of waste and high consumption in public

latrines and urinals has been dealt with through the Chairman,

Urban Council. After correspondence it was agreed that the rate

of flushing should be regulated by this Sub-department in consult- ation with the Urban Council and that the supply to all latrines

and urinals should be shut off at night. This was accordingly

done from about the end of May to the 19th August when at the

request of the Medical Officer of Health a full supply was temporarily restored in view of the outbreak of cholera in the

Colony.

Notices have been painted up in some of the larger latrines warning unauthorized persons not to interfere with the

water supply fittings.
