I have received your despatch No. 55 of the

6th April regarding the threatened destruction of

the Canton-Kowloon Railway.

Should Mr. Philip Tyrau press you for

reply to his letter of the 1st April you should inform

him that I am not prepared to pass on to His Majesty's

Goverment in the United Kingdom his suggestion that

they should approach the Japanese Goverment with a

view to preventing further destruction or occupation

of the line.

Similarly, I do not propose to take any

action in regard to the suggestion made in the last

paragraph of your despatch and should prefer that the

matter was not pursued further.
