Please ask Dr. Maxwell to show you copy of enclosure in
his air mail letter to Mr. Moss of August 6th regarding
charges against Hankow International Red Cross Committee. Malicious accusations of this sort may do considerable harm and I think it important to prevent their repetition.
Best course would seem to me to be for His Majesty's Ambassador as one Honorary President to write personally to Governor as the other suggesting to him desirability of securing withdrawal of charges by Mrs. Selwyn Clarke if she
has not already done this and taking such measures as seem to him appropriate against source from which she obtained
the story.
Unless you or Dr. Maxwell see objection, I think you should furnish His Majesty's Ambassador with material for suggested letter or, if that is very difficult, yourself
address a private letter to Governor.
Repeated to Shanghai No. 778 and Hongkong.
