Dear Gent,

6

any thanks for your 53828/14/38 of 26th Sept. 1938.

I know the lady in question fairly well: she is

· but there often carried away by her 'ardour for humanity'

is no real harm in her.

My own opinion is that too much has been made of

the Hankow incident. The suggestion of moving Selwyn- Clarke

on account of it is absurd; moreover, as the lady is publicly devoting herself (according to her own lights) to the good

of China and is for that reason the object of much suspicion on the part of the Japanese, any such measure would have

very unfortunate reactions, especially among the Chemie,

Yours sincerely,

C.E...Gent Esa., 0.BE., D.S.0., M.C.
