COMMUNICATION BY THE PRESIDENT.
Gifts in aid of Medical Work in China.
88
The PRESIDENT:
Before proceeding to the question
on our agenda, I have a communication to make to the Council.
The Netherlands Minister for Foreign Affairs, by a letter
addressed to the Secretary-General on April 1st, 1938,
signified his Government's intention of contributing, by a
gift to the value of 50,000 florins, to the work of
medical assistance which has been undertaken in China by
the League of Nations.
At the same time, I may as well inform the Council
that an important gift of medical supplies has been made by
the Danish Red Cross and has been sent immediately to China.
In view of the importance of these gifts, I thought it
desirable that the Council should be informed thereof.
Mr. QUO TAI CHI: On behalf of the Chinese
Government and the people I wish to express warm
appreciation of this generous gift by the Netherlands
Government, and also to express similar thanks to the Danish
Red Cross. Both these gifts are in aid of medical work in
China and are not only in accordance with the terms of the
Council resolution but bear testimony to the traditional
friendship between the two countries and my own country.
As Spring advances and Summer is near at hand, I
think the need for medical relief will increase, because
there is a danger of a general outbreak of epidemics.
this reason, these gifts will be all the more deeply
appreciated in China.
