Medicine and Nursing have special staff members who carry out
the training with the help of a Red Cross Curative and Nursing
Unit. For practical teaching of preventive work, the
Department of Preventive Medicine utilizes a refugees camp
and recruit camp. The school itself 18 situated in the
Kwangya Middle School, Changsha.
The courses given are grouped for the purpose of
training four types of field unitat
(1) Ambulance Units (Chiefly for stretchers, first-aid, and
elementary nursing work, with training in preventive
and sanitary practice).
A class of 120 ambulance workers were graduated on
July 29. The purpose of this type of unit is to provide first
aid workers, who can staff a sanitary company or serve as
dressers to take care of the wounded during the inevitable long
transit to the rear. These workers are middle school students,
some of whom have had training and experience in first aid and
dressing. Another class of 150 began their training on July
13. This latter group are to provide the dresser type of
personnel for preventive, curative, and nursing units.
(2) Nursing Units (chiefly for dressing and nursing work,
with training in preventive and sanitary practice).
The personnel of these units are composed of trained
nurses and dressers from civil hospitals.
3) Curative Units (chiefly for surgical work, with
training in medical, nursing, preventive, and sanitary
practice). These units are composed of qualified
doctors, nurses and dressers. In connexion with the
training of Curative Units, a special course on war
surgery is given in the Army Hospital attached to the
school for the benefit of Red Cross doctors who are
not surgical specialists. It has been arranged to
