Typhoon warnings. The following from Shanghai dated

August 12 is another sidelight on the Japanese:

Typhoon. During the night of 9th/10th August

"a typhoon struck the Yangtsze Estuary. We had

"very little information as to the progress of

"the typhoon on its way up the coast and we

"understand that Siccawei were working at the

"at the distinct disadvantage of getting no

"reports from Japanese stations, information

"being suppressed for military purposes. We

"are accordingly arranging for our ships to give

"Siccawei as much information as possible, but

"although we can give them a fair range of information

"North and South of Shanghai, lack of information from

"the East is likely to prove a distinct disadvantage

"to the observatory here. We have asked the ocean

"companies to co-operate on this point".
