I have the honour to refer to my secret

despatch of the 14th of March, 1938, and to inform you

that inquiries have now been completed, and a claim

amounting to $30,469 drawn up on behalf of the British

subjects involved in the sinking of certain fishing

junks by a Japanese submarine in September 1937.

are shewn in the enclosed "Summary of estimated losses

incurred by British-born subjects at Chelong." I
