S. S. "ASIAN"
Claim for Detention in Formosa.
Our S. S. "Asian" sailed from Hong Ko g at 9 a.m.
on the 7th February, 1938, for Parseval Bay (French Indo-China),
and was released from Formosa at 11 a.m. on the 20th February,
and is expected to arrive at Hong Kong on the evening of the
21st February. The vessel will therefore have been detained
15 days.
The business on which the "Asian" was fixed i.e., to
carry Limestone from Parseval Bay to Hong Kong was equivalent.
to a monthly Time Charter rate of about HK$30,000.00 per month,
or in other words had the vessel been trading she would have
earned about $1,000.00 per day gross.
On a Time Charter basis the owner pays out of the gross
earnings, the crew's wages, stores and Insurance, and the
Charterer would pay for Bunker Coal and Fresh Water.

The shippers of the Limestone had also engaged coolies
and junks to load the Limestone and had to pay compensation to
the coolies and junks due to the non-arrival of the vessel at
her loading port, and they have claimed compensation from us to
the amount of Piastres 843.75.
Due to the wrongful detention of the vessel we have
lost approximately as follows:-
15 days earnings @ $1,000.00 per day Coal used approximately 125 Tõns @
$22.00 Per Ton
Fresh Water used approximately 80 Tons
@ 50 cents.
