All Government Hospitals other than the Tsan Yuk Hospital cater for both Europeans and Asiatics.
Queen Mary Hospital has 509 general beds and 32 maternity beds. Of the 509 general beds 16 are in an isolation wing, 57 are in private wards mainly occupied by Europeans and there are two general wards totalling 32 beds for Europeans. The remainder are native beds. Of the maternity beds 12 are occupied mainly by Europeans and the remainder by natives. Kowloon Hospital consists of four blocks with a total of 138 beds. (1 Block is reserved for maternity cases). 72 beds
for Asiatics, 66 for Europeans. Mental Hospital 14 beds for Europeans, 18 beds for Asiatics.

The study of Cantonese until the Second Certificate is obtained is compulsory for Nursing Sisters but the Director of Medical Services has discretion in special oircumstances to exempt any particular Sister from such compulsory study. All allowance not exceeding $15 a month is paid to assist with teachers' fees.
Language allowances are paid to officers who pass the prescribed examinations at the following rates per annum:
