CONDITIONS OF SERVICE FOR NURSING SISTERS IN THE MEDICAL DEPARTMENT
HONG KONG.
Appointments to the Staff of Nursing Sisters are made by the Secretary of State for the Colonies, on the recommendation of the Overseas Nursing Association.
A Nursing Sister should be between twenty-seven and thirty-five years of age, and must be a State Registered general nurse, and also hold the C.M.B. certificate.
A Nursing Sister is engaged for a period of three years. She is provided with a first-class passage, subject to an undertaking to repay the cost if she leaves the service of the Government within three years from the date of her arrival in the Colony for any reason other than mental or physical infirmity. She is required to enter into an agreement to this effect with the Crown Agents.
If at any time during the said period of three years it is established to the satisfaction of the Governor that a Nursing Sister is not qualified for efficient service in the Colony, he may cancel her appointment, subject to the confirmation of the Secretary of State for the Colonies, without giving her further compensation than a passage back to England, provided that the Governor is satisfied that she has, by her good conduct deserved it.
A Nursing Sister may be required to undertake private nursing or to serve in any Hospital in the Colony. When first appointed she is almost invariably attached to the private nursing staff, being trans ferred to the Hospitals' staff as suitable vacancies occur.
A Nursing Sister received salary at the rate of £220 per annu rising by annual increments of £15 to £295 per annum. She is ent to half salary during the voyage to the Colony. She receives als furnished quarters, fuel, light, attendance, uniform and laundry
At the end of the said period of three years a first-class back to England is granted provided the Nursing Sister avails he of the passage within one month from the termination of her enga
A Nursing Sister who wishes to leave the service of the Gov during the period of her engagement is required to give one mont notice or to pay the Government a sum equivalent to one month's salary.
A Nursing Sister is entitled to leave in accordance with th General Orders of the Colony.
There are a limited mumber of appointments as Ward Sisters Nursing Sisters who have shown marked ability, have good healt are in all ways suitable, will be considered for these appoint. if there is a vacancy at the completion of their three years' agreement. Ward Sisters are on the permanent staff and their appointments are
pensionable.
Nursing Sisters on agreement are eligible for 4 months' full pay leave, of which not less than 2 months and not more than 3 months, may be taken on the expiration of their agreements, and the balance during the currency of their agreements. They are also eligible for casual leave in accordance with local regulations.
