With reference to your letter of the 2nd December
(53712/5/38) regarding a petition addressed to the
Governor of Hong Kong on behalf of persons claiming to

be relatives of a Chinese seaman named Cheung Kwai Wan
(or Ah Wing or Chong Kae Wing), who lost his life
following the sinking of the s.s. "Thorpeness" on the
21st June last, I am directed by the Board of Trade to
state, for the information of Mr. Secretary MacDonald,
that they have been in communication with the owners of
the vessel on the matter. The owners, in turn, have
passed the correspondence to Messrs. P. B. Pandelis
Limited of 13, St. Mary Axe, E.C.3, who were managing
the vessel at the time of loss. The latter firm have
now requested the Board to obtain information as to
whether the deceased Chinaman was married or single and
as to the number of his family. The Managers say that
