must be through the British Ambassador in China or the
Chinese Ambassador in London: at the same time I tried
to intimate that I did not think it worth raising.
6. I am sure that my visit to Canton had a good
effect, especially as it was paid at a time when Canton
is suffering daily from air-raids. Air-raids took
place there on all three days but on the 21st before my
arrival and on the 22nd and 23rd at such a distance from
Shameen that the explosions were not audible there.
My main impressions were as follows. Firstly
the Cantonese construed the visit as an expression of
goodwill and sympathy on the part of this British Colony.
Secondly, the Cantonese are not unduly depressed by the
severe bombardment which is now their daily experience;
their energy in clearing the streets, railway stations
and other such places of debris is admirable, as was the
dignified fortitude with which they spoke to me of their
losses from aerial attacks.
7.
For my own part, short though the visit was, it
has given me a first-hand even though superficial
acquaintance with the layout, dimensions and the
circumstances of Canton, and of the river highway between
that city and Hong Kong, which cannot fail to be of help
to me in dealing with the many matters concerning both
places which come before the Governor of this Colony in
the ordinary course of his duties.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient, humble servant,
1. God brthete
Governor.
