THIS
INDENTURE
made the third day of November in the year of
our Lord One thousand eight hundred and forty nine, Between the
REVEREND VINCENT JOHN STANTON Government Chaplain at Hong Kong
in China of the one part, and the RIGHT REVEREND GEORGE LORD
BISHOP OF VICTORIA of the other part. WHEREAS the lot piece or
parcel of land in Victoria hereinafter mentioned and described
was in or about the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred
and forty five granted by Her present Majesty to the said
Vincent John Stanton for the purpose of assisting towards the
building and endowing of a College and of otherwise forwarding
Missionary objects in China AND WHEREAS the said Vincent John
Stanton has since obtaining the said Grant caused certain
buildings to be erected on the said Ground and other improve-
ments to be made there on at a very considerable expense which
has been defrayed by him out of monies obtained in England by
voluntary contributions and a sum of one thousand pounds given
and contributed by the said Vincent John Stanton from his own
individual means and other monies advanced by the said Vincent
John Stanton to the amount in all of six hundred and forty
three pounds sixteen shillings and eight pence in expectation
that such last mentioned amount would be repaid to him by means
of further voluntary contributions, and such repayment has been
accordingly made by the said Lord Bishop to the said Vincent
John Stanton out of funds which have been voluntarily contri-
buted and placed in his hands AND WHEREAS it has been agreed
that the objects for which the said Grant was originally in-
tended will be best attained by the said Vincent John Stanton
conveying the said land and buildings to the said Lord Bishop
and his successors in the manner hereinafter mentioned NOW THIS
