I am etc. to refer to the
letter from this Department of the 3rd
of March forwarding a copy of a
despatch from the Governor of Hong
Kong regarding the salaries of the
Government Marine Surveyors in that
Colony.
2. As a result of
discussion
which took place at the Board of Trade
each
in may
earlier this month between members of
the two Departments, the Secretary of
State understands that the Board of
Trade consider that there is no
possibility of regarding Government
Marine Surveyors in the Colonies as
eligible for consideration in connection
with appointments to the higher posts
in the Board of Trade itself.
