I have the honour to refer to my

confidential despatch of 12th October, 1938, on the

subject of the salaries of Government Marine Surveyors,

and to inform you that I have assumed, from your general approval of the recommendations of the

Anomalies Committee regarding new salary scales, conveyed in your confidential (4) despatch of 27th

April, 1939, that the proposals contained in my

despatch under reference were approved subject to

modification of the residential allowance scheme as

now agreed. The salaries as set out in the enclosure to my despatch of 12th October have accordingly been

included in the scales recently published in the

revised Appendix VI to General Orders with the further

modification that the salary of the Principal Surveyor

of Ships has been fixed at £1,200 instead of £1,250 in

view of the new terms of residential allowance

applicable to him, in the same way as for other officers

whom it had originally been proposed to place on the

fixed salaries of £1,250.

The general principle has been adopted of

permitting officers serving on the old scales to transfer

to the new scales at the corresponding incremental
