I saw Sir William McLean and
Prof. Channon this morning. The principal
point on which they wanted guidance was
whether or not it would be regarded as
objectionable, on political or other
grounds, for them to make a recommendation
in their report that instead of having a
separate Engineering faculty in the proposed
Malaya University, they should recommend that
students from Malava should go to Hong Kong
for their engineering studies. They explained
that after a great deal of consideration
they had tentatively decided to make no
definite recommendation to this effect but
to set out in their report the advantages
and disadvantages of setting up such a school
in Malaya, or alternatively of sending
students to Hong Kong. They would deal
