62. Of the 1,275 in provided schools 286 were in the mixed schools for British children. The Evening Institute accounted for 253. There were 176 in attendance at the Vernacular Normal School for Women and the remaining 560 were at the Belilios Public School. For details of the Grant-in-Aid Girls' schools reference should be made to Table IV.

63. The 179 girls attending the four Garrison schools, classed in Table I as not controlled, are included in the above figures under unaided schools.

TRAINING OF TEACHERS.

67. Trained teachers fall into four groups, viz., (1) those possessing a certificate recognised by the English Board of Education or its equivalent, (2) graduates of the University of Hong Kong, (3) those who have passed through one or other of the Government vernacular normal schools and (4) those who have satisfactorily attended either English or Vernacular normal classes in connection with the Evening Institute.

68. In the Education Group of the Faculty of Arts at the University there were during the first half of the year 47 students of whom 20 were holders of Government Scholarships, and during the second half of the year 58 students of whom 25 were holders of Government Scholarships.

69. Evening Institute training embraces a three years course and 35 Vernacular and 9 English teachers obtained certi- ficutes. In all 270 teachers attended vernacular classes and 70 attended English classes.

TECHNICAL EDUCATION,

A brief account of the year's activities of the Trade and Technical Schools will be found in the report of the Prin- cipal, see Annexe IV.

65. No new European Instructors for the Trade School were appointed during 1937, but a Chief Instructor in Wireless Telegraphy and an Assistant Instructor in Building have been recruited in England and are expected to arrive early in 1938.

66. Technical classes continued to be held under the auspices of the 'Evening Institute'. The emoluments of organisers and lecturers were restored to previous rates in the second half of the year.

HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION.

71. Dr. G. M. Hargreaves, Medical Officer, Dr. Au King and Dr. Wong Hok Nin, Chinese Medical Officers, were on duty throughout the year. Dr. (Mrs.) Nash replaced Dr. (Mrs.) Fehily as Lady Medical Officer on 1st October.

72. The Medical Officers are responsible for the medical inspection of school children at the Government schools whose pupils are required to pay a medical inspection fee. These include all the primary and secondary schools for Chinese and Indians, and the Junior Technical School.

73. The service includes among other things the inspection of the children's eyes and the provision free of charge of spectacles to any who need them. It includes also free tonsilec- tomy (or the removal of adenoids) and hospital in-patient fees for those undergoing the operation.
