Health Officers.

The other large increases in the schedule come
under the head of the Hospitals Division. The Director
of Medical Services reports that the existing staff of medical officers is seriously inadequate, especially in
view of the great increase of work which has resulted
from the opening of the Queen Mary Hospital in 1937.
The medical staff of Government hospitals has remained
unchanged during the past four years while a comparison
of figures for 1935 and 1937 shows that there has been
an increase of 41% in the number of in-patients and of
27% in the number of out-patients treated in these
hospitals.

In these circumstances I strongly support the
application to increase the number of European medical
officers by two and I request that, if you approve, steps
may be taken to arrange for the recruitment of two suitable
officers in time to enable them to arrive in the Colony
as early as possible in 1939.

Particulars of office
The remaining increases shown in the schedule
are mostly self-explanatory and form part of the general
expansion of the Medical services of the Colony. They
do not include the appointment of a European Lady Almoner
about which I have addressed you separately in my despatch
No. 520 of 4th July. It may, also, be advisable to state
that the additional X-Ray sister is necessitated by the
maintenance of X-Ray therapy departments on both sides
of the harbour while the additions to the Investigative
Division are demanded by the great increase of work,
especially in the preparation of sera and vaccines, now
