This issue of NOTES FROM CHINA gives a picture of the situation since the fall of Canton and Hankow. The first article has been specially written by JACK CHEN who has been in China for the last six months, both at the various fronts and behind the lines.

Following this article is an official message sent to Chinese living overseas explaining the real nature of the Japanese invasion of South China.

The Meeting of the PEOPLE'S POLITICAL COUNCIL on October 28th. was far more important than the casual press notices in this country suggested. There was a prevailing belief among those who have underestimated China's determination to carry on resistance until victory is hers, that the fall of Canton and of Hankow would find her leaders ready to discuss terms with Japan. The Resolutions of the PEOPLE'S POLITICAL COUNCIL which represents every section of the Chinese people are an indication of the continued and de- veloping unity of China and the determined resistance which is the result of it.

Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek's message to the Meeting and the more detailed statement to the Chinese people which followed it provide a perspective of the present military situation and an analysis of the fall of Canton and Hankow.

The last article is the first published statistical survey of the Japanese "occupation".
