us.
I would like to state that we have had a
considerable amount of extra work over the storage of these
coaches which had been augmented by the Wagons-Lits
authorities at Home continually harassing their representa- tives out here after the latter have reached agreement with
Various local factors are involved which can, it is
submitted, only be appreciated by the "man on the spot".
We did not want to store these coaches at all, owing to the
space limitations and to the fact that our staff were fully
occupied with extra work necessitated by typhoon repairs,
the hostilities in China, and the connection with the
Canton-Hankow Railway. We agreed to store the coaches only
when we realised the quandary in which the local Wagons-Lits
representatives were placed. The latter have been most
appreciative of our efforts to help them and are fully
satisfied with the various arrangements made on their behalf.
In conclusion, it is submitted that the request
of the Chairman of Thos. Cook & Son, Ltd., that the cost of this siding (sic) be shared equally between the Wagons-Lits
Company and the Kowloon-Canton Railway is most unreasonable.
The sidings concerned will be of considerable use to the
Railway at a later period, but I could not possibly have justified their construction this year in the ordinary way.
