Birth Control News.

LONDON, OCTOBER, 1937.

NEW SERIES.

Vol. XVI, No. 3.

WHO SENDS DOWN THE BIRTH RATE? While there is an incessant outcry about the falling birth-rate, increasing numbers of healthy potential parents are forcibly sterilized against their wills by bureaucracy.

The Sunday Graphic heads a column "PEOPLE WHO MUST NOT MARRY," and

says:

A full inquiry into the Marriage Ban which exists in many Government and business offices is to be undertaken in connection with the Government's investigation of the birth-rate problem.

It has been pointed out to the

31

authorities that hundreds of thousands of men and women are forbidden to marry at a time when the falling birth rate is causing anxiety.

In many police forces, including the Metropolitan, there is a definite ban on officers marrying in the early years of their service.

MUST BE BACHELORS.

In many banks and commercial houses marriage is not encouraged among young men employees. Young naval officers are similarly affected.

Men doctors in a large number of public appointments are compelled to remain bachelors.

Women employed by the B.B.C. are forbidden to wed, except in rare cases, on penalty of losing their jobs.

A similar ban applies to women in the Civil Service. Post Office, and teaching profession, and women clerks, typists, nurses and health visitors in the municipal service."
