Your secret despatch of 15th November anti-gas
Appointment of whole-time Air Raids Precautions
Officer approved, after consultation with Home Office, I have
telegraphed about officer under consideration for vacancy.
I observe from paragraph 4 (h) of despatch that
you are considering manufacture of gas masks locally for
sale to general public. In this connection please see my
circular despatch of 9th November. If you will state what
quantities you require, presumably of civilian type, referred to in paragraph 2 (a) of my circular despatch, and date by
which delivery is required, I will let you know at once when
they
/can be supplied.
Nevertheless I appreciate necessity of taking
steps to arrange if possible local manufacture to cover emergency period in which there would be liability of
interruption of shipping communications.
Subject to above necessity Home Office is anxious
to maintain factory here in production and it is desirable
that Colonial supplies should continue to be manufactured
in this country.
