Mr. Morris's bullying methods and would themselves
welcome some curb on his activities.
As Sir Geoffry Northcote will be new to the
East and may have to rely on Mr. N.L. Smith to a
very great extent for advice and for liaison with
the leading Chinese in the Colony, Colonel Sleeman
said that he would greatly appreciate any semi-
official letter which we could send to Mr. N.L.
Smith to explain the position and ask for his interest
and co-operation in putting things on a more regular
footing. If you agree, I will write privately to
Mr. N.L. Smith to explain briefly this position as
Colonel Sleeman has represented it to Sir Geoffry
Northcote, and to say that we should be grateful
for his interest and for his assistance in clearing
up the present difficulties.
