I understand that there have been Press

enquiries in regard to cholera in Hong Kong.

The

of

cases of cholera reported for Hong Kong are as follows:-

For the week ending the 1st of July

4 imported; 11 deaths.

For the week ending the 7th of August

For the week ending the 14th of August 141 cases;

5 imported; 87 deaths.

The next weekly telegram may be expected on

the 24th of August.

It is understood that enquiries have been

made of the Publicity Officer and that the outbreak

has been connected with the Shanghai disturbances.

This, of course, is not the case. I under-

stand from Dr. O'Brien that no doubt arrangements are

being made to vaccinate the European population. I

don't know if it would be considered desirable to send

a short telegram to Hong Kong enquiring whether

vaccinali arrangements have been made to cautisionto the refugees

on arrival in view of the outbreak, un case in anquicias.

If

any

get special Statement QUDDANASIMOnt has to be made to the

Press, it might be that the first cases were reported

in the week ending the 31st of July and were 11 in

number, and that up to the 14th of August 167 cases

have occurred in addition to the original 11 with 111

deaths in addition to the original 11, making a total

178 cares and 122 deatles

of 10

in all.

It would be preferable not to make a Press

announcement but to give this information to enquirers,

and to point out that the epidemic started before any

question of evacuation from Shanghai arose.

Perhaps enquirers could also be told that no

doubt the appropriate measures are being taken by the
