FOREIGN OFFICE.
S.W.1.
7th September, 1937.
1.
101
I am directed by Mr. Secretary Eden to transmit to
you herewith to be laid before the Secretary of State for the
Colonies a copy of a telegram received from His Majesty's
Chargé d'Affaires at Nanking regarding the possible
establishment of an aeroplane assembly depot in the new
territories, Hong Kong.
2. Such a proceeding seems to Mr. Eden to be open to
serious doubts on legal and political grounds, but he would
be grateful if he might be informed of any news or observations
which may be received from the Government of Hong Kong to
whom this telegram was repeated by Mr. Gage. It will be seen
that Mr. Gage has already expressed doubts as to the
admissibility of, the scheme and Mr. Eden does not therefore
propose any action pending further developments.
I am,
Sir,
Your obedient Servant,
Monald
