GOVERNMENT HOUSE,
HONG KONG.
6th July, 1937.
I have the honour to inform you that I
have received unofficial representations indicating
that a visit on my part to Macao would be welcomed
by the Government of that Colony.
2.
The last of such visits was in 1933 as
reported in Sir William Peel's despatch No. 543
of 2nd November, 1933. It is on record that
Sir Andrew Caldecott in 1936 projected such a visit
but abandoned it in deference to the period of Court.
mourning.
3.
I have no doubt that on the arrival of
Sir Geoffrey Northcote an official exchange of
visits will in due course be proposed, and I should
not have suggested such a breach with tradition had
it not been that Dr. Barbosa, who began a fresh
term of Governorship three months ago after an
absence of some years, was personally well known
to me during his previous administrations and has
informally expressed the view that he would welcome
a visit from me in my present capacity.
4.
Such a visit need not entail absence from
the Colony for more than the inside of a day.
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
W.G.A.ORMSBY-GORE, P.C., M.P.,
