FOREIGN OFFICE, S.W.1.,
16th October, 1937.

Dear Boyle,
With reference to Foreign Office letter W 18642/31/36
of the 7th October and to our telephone conversation yesterday
morning, about the proposed purchase of aircraft by the
Portuguese Government for use at Macao, I am writing to
enclose a copy of a letter which Roberts has received from
Bateman at Lisbon on this subject.
I know that you are doing all you can to get an early
and if possible a favourable reply to the Portuguese enquiry.
You will see that Bateman, in his letter, again emphasises
the urgency of the question.
As regards the proposed purchase of "Gladiators".
to which Bateman also refers, I understand that this was
discussed yesterday by the appropriate Committee of Imperial
Defence Sub-Committee.
We are sending copies of this letter to the Colonial
office, and also, together with copies of previous telegraphic
correspondence on the subject, to the Admiralty for their
information.
Major A.R. Boyle, 0.B.F., M.C.,
Air Ministry.
Yours ever,
(Sgd.) J.J. Coulson.
(for C. Johnston)
