Mr. Gellion told me that all the above
projects, except the last regarding Timor, had been
turned down, and that it was understood that Dr. Tamagnini
Barbosa was using his influence in Lisbon to prevent the ratification of this last proposal. As I had the
impression that undue emphasis was being laid on servicos
to us and Japanese blandishments, I made no comment except
that I would imagine that Japanese penetration into any
Portuguese Colony would hardly help that Colony in the
long run, and that judging From Japanese penetration in
the Philippine IslanŐB and especially near Davro, they
might prove uncomfortably persistent Colonists.
I record with pleasure that is sxcellency the
Governor spoke very highly of Mr. Gellion, who showed me
the greatest hospitality. I was glad also to learn that
immediately prior to my visit the Governor ad called a
meeting and granted a 'pure water" certificate to the
kaono Waterworks which is a British company under the
chairmanship of ar. Gellion. i have beɛn informed that
there had been lengthy and cause less difficulties about
this Certificate, which had now been given to forestall
the expected complaint by myself!
I have the honour to be,
Your cellency's most obedient,
humble servant,
(Signed)
A.2.
