Palace, and at 5.30 p.m. His Excellency (who had sent

the Harbour Master, who corresponda in rank to the

Colonial Secretary in a British Colony, and his A. 2.0.

to welcome me on arrival) returned my oall at the British

Vice Consul's private residence. That evening Mr.

Gellion gave an official dinner at his residence which

was attended by the Governor and all the principal

Colonial officials, while the following day was occupied

with a luncheon in my honour given by the Governor

which the most proper sentiments were exchanged about "our

ancient and noble alli

a tea party given by myself,

Lieutenant-Comumder D. Lampen, E. N. and the officers of

H. M. . *Moth", and an unofficial dinner party given by

Kr. Gellion. B.K.S. *Moth“ left kaoso before 6.00

on August 4th.

Dr. Artur Tamagnini de zouza Barbosa is doing

hia third spell as Governor of Macao. I understood him

to tell me that he was concurrently Director General of

the Portuguese Colonies in the Ministry a Lisbon. I had

opportunities of considerable conversations with him, and

he was very cordial. Dr. Barbosa mentioned various minor

difficulties with the Hong Kong Government and with the

Chinese Government, which included recognition by Hong

Kong of certain Mercantile carine officers tickets issued

by Macao, visits by Hong Kong Governors (of which the last

was in 1933 ; troubles with the Chinese Authorities about

Customs
