"DISTRESS IN CHINA
RALIA PUND OPENED BY LORD MAYOR
The Lord Mayor of London, Sir George Broadbridge, in a letter to the Fress, appeals for generous support on behalf of the joint committee representing the British Red Cross Society, the China Association, and the Conference of Britimặ Missionary Societies, which had been formed to render prompt and efficient help to all these who may be in distress in China, as the result of the conflict in that country «
The letter states:
The number of casualties among the general population in the danger areas and also among the multitudes of refugees who have been evacuated to mek safety and shelter is enormous. Chelers and typhus have already broken out. There is an acute shortage of medical and sanitary supplies of all kinds, and the difficulty of the position is aggravated owing to the dislocation of transport facilities.
Not least, there is great distress among British subjects, chiefly at Shanghai, due to the destruction of homes and property and loss of employment following the stoppage and disorganisation of trade.
I have consented to open a fund at the Mansion House, and in making this appeal I have the full assent of the Foreign Office.
All funds sent to me will be paid over to the above-mentioned committee and administered in China by a strong organi sation, under the Presidency of H.M.Ambassador and the vice-presidency of the Governor of Hongkong. I earnestly appeal for generous support.
Cheques and postal orders should be made payable to "The Lord Mayor's Fund for the Relief of Distress in China", crossed "Bank of England", and sent to me at the above widress, or through one of the three societies above mentioned".
