CLOTHING SUB-COMMITTEE:

Dame Rachel informed the Committee of the transactions of the Clothing Sub-Committee at a meeting held that morning •

Lady Layton had accepted the Chairmanship of the Sub- Committee and Mrs. Gordon-Lennox the Honorary Secretary ship.

The Sub-Committee recommended:

(1) the engagement of a paid, or an honorary, stenotypist, and of a woman organizer, who was specially well qualified, at £4 a week for one month:

(2) that the Lord Mayor of London be asked to move the Mayors of

Provincial cities such as Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester to encourage the establishment of local clothing Committeos with independent collecting and shipping organizations; (3) that the Sub-Committee be empowered to spend up to £1,000

on overcoats, rugs and blankets:

(4) that the Sub-Committee be empowered to issue an appeal for

clothing through the Press:

(5) that the title of the Sub-Committee should be Clothing and

Comforts Sub-Committee.

These recommendations were agreed to, the sum mentioned in (3) being increased to £2,000 and the opinion expressed that blankets should take precedence of overcoats and rugs.

MEDICAL SUR-COMMITTEE:

Sir Harold Fawcus informed the Committee of the transactions of the Medical Sub-Committee at a meeting held that morning.

He reported that tenders amounting to approximately £9,000 had been accepted from two firms Evans Sons Lescher & Webb, Ltd., of Liverpool and May & Baker Ltd., of Lond on for the provision of medical supplies excluding instruments and dressings. These goods would be shipped during the week, under the direction of John Swire & Sons, partly from London and partly from Liverpool, consigned to the Governor of Hongkong.

The Sub-Committee had gone into the question of supplies of surgical instruments and dressings and had decided to accept the tender of the Surgical Manufacturers Co. for most of the items, and to put out the remainder to tender to' certain other firms.

Dr. Gordon Thompson had agreed to act as Honorary Secretary for the Sub-Committee and it was considered that his out-of- pocket expenses should be paid by the Fund. In order that his work should be properly carried out it was thought essential that some form of office accommodation and clerical staff should be provided.

Major-General Oliver Robinson had been co-opted and it was recommended that he be co-opted to the Executive Committee.

Great assis tame had been received from the Home Office in connection with the importation of morphia into Hongkong.

The Sub-Committee recommended that £10,000 be placed atits disposal for the purchase of surgical instruments and dressings.

The Executive Committee agreed to and confirmed these recommendations and decisions, it being also decided that
