1. Captain Nils Leknes of S.S. "Jeff Davis" (local
agents Thoreson & Co.) took this photograph at 2.30 p.m.
115°25'E (some- on 27th September at Lat. 20°49′N Long.
where south of Hong Kong) five days after the alleged
attack and on the same day that a number of survivors
were picked up by S. S. "Scharnhorst" and S.S. "Kaying".
2. The photograph was more or less a silhouette but
two guns one fore, and one aft, could be clearly seen
and the following markings could be discerned.

Particulars of Lat. and Long, name "Joff Davis", the
markings on the submarine and the master's signature were
inscribed on the back of the photograph.
3. The photograph was given to the Secretary of the
Commission, Mr. J.C. Macdouall, by Mr. Johnson of Thoreson
& Co. when he chanced to see him at lunch on 19th October
at the Gloucester Hotel café. Mr. Johnson informed Mr.
Macdouall that the photograph had been taken by the master
of the "Jeff Davis" who had requested him to hand it to
the Secretary of the Commission as he thought "it might
be of interest to the Commission".
4. The photograph was handed to the Assistant Attorney
General at 2.05 p.m. the same day, who at once rang up
Thoreson & Co. and was informed that the "Jeff Davis" had
sailed for Los Angeles at 1 p.m. that day.
