IMPORTANT

At about 1420 today "aturday, Chinese Maritime

Customs Cruiser Chaing, when in approximate position Latitude 22° 25' X. Longitude 113° 54' *., off Black Point, was fired

at by Japanese destroyer mamber unknown from approximate position Latitude 22° 28' N. Longitude 113° 51′ 7.

Chahsing turned away from destroyer to make for

'traston Load and Castle Peak, en was shortly struck by one

ricochet. Vessel was then run sground approximately half a

aile North East of Black Point and abandoned. There were no

casualties.

Approximately four ro.nls were fired after vessel

was aground, and fifteen to twenty rounds were fired in all.

I have interviewed Commander of Chahsing who is positive that his position as reported when fired at is correct,

1.6. he was well within territorial waters. Position of Jap- Ane se destroyer on opening fire is approximate, but she was

probably outside territorial waters. Chahsing is a vessel of 148 feet long, one funnel, painted grey, one 3-pdr mounted forward, and a Chinese Maritime Customs flag.
