TRANSLATION NO.169

F. Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Sir,

18th September, 1937.

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt

of Your Excellency's Note No.142 of September 14th.

The positions at which action, which was

considered appropriate, was taken by Japanese men-of-war

in respect of Chinese Customs surveillance vessels were

1130 51.8 E. longitude and 220 27.4 N. latitude, and 1130 51.7 E. longitude and 250 28.8 N. latitude. Both

these points are outside Hongkong territorial waters and

there is therefore no reason why a protest should be

received from the British Government.

I avail, etc.

(L.S.) Koki HIROTA

H.I.J.M. Minister for Foreign Affairs.

His Excellency

Sir Robert L. Craigie, K.C.M.G.,

British Ambassador

at Tokyo.
