POLICE STAND BY IN HONG KONG

ANTI-JAPANESE RIOTS

From Our Own Correspondent

HONG KONG, Wednesday. Hundreds of police stood by in Hong Kong throughout the night following anti-Japanese demonstrations last evening which occasionally assumed ugly proportions.

A crowd attacked and beat four men who they alleged had been distributing | poisoned fruit to children. Three fought their way clear as the fourth was rescued by Indian constables in a baton charge.

Later a crowd threatened a Japanese shopkeeper and his family and the police were again called out.

Anti-Japanese feeling is now at its highest following the bombing of Canton and the influx of thousands of terror- stricken refugees telling exaggerated stories of the effects of the raid.

Strong police patrols are concentrated in the Japanese store areas with riflemen standing by at all stations for an emergency.

A minor disorder occurred at Wanchai, Hong-kong, this afternoon, when Chinese demonstrated in front of a Japanese shop in consequence of persistent and foolish rumours that Japanese agents were poisoning the fish, fruit, and other edibles. The police dispersed the crowd, and there were no arrests.
