Reuters today indicates the possibility of
Japanese air attacks on Canton.
I suggest that Foreign
Office should ask Tokyo to appreciate the futility of such
action. Canton's loyalty to Central Government is now
at least doubtful and aeroplane intervention in Shanghai
area from Canton base hardly worth consideration.
Embarrassment to Hong Kong should perhaps not be stressed,
