The Prime Minister's Principal Private
Secretary at 10 Downing Street, (0.8. Cleverly)
is a grandson of C. St.G. Cleverly who was Surveyor-
General in Hong Kong circa 1850. There have
descended to him various trophies, etc., which his
grandfather brought back from Hong Kong, and amongst
these possessions there are two presentation trowels,
as follows:-
1.
A silver trowel with carved wood handle
bearing the following inscription:-
"Presented by Sir J.F. Davis, Bart., Governor
and Commander-in-Chief of Hong Kong, Hig Majesty's Plenipotentiary and Chief Superintendent of the trade of British subjects in China to Charles St. George Cleverly, Esquire, Surveyor-General, on the occasion of laying the foundation stone of the Church of St. John at Victoria on the 11th day of March, 1847.
