It is the general principle that the act payment of salaries shall be made in doll... except on long leave, when payment shall be made in sterling.

In the case of new appointments half sterling salary is allowed during the period of transit to Hong Kong, payment being made in sterling on arrival.

Members of the staff are entitled to free unfurnished quarters within the University grounds, or a house allowance where such quar- ters are not available.

Members occupying these are entitled to:-

(a) Free water supply.

(b) Free telephone.

(c) Electrical supply up to the maxi- mum amount fixed by the Council. All necessary renovations and repairs to these quarters are carried out by the University.

Electric light bulbs, two ceiling and two desk fans are supplied on first occupation,

The scale of house allowances granted to House members of the staff not residing within the University grounds is as follows :-

(a) $100 a month for unmarried mem-

bers of the staff.

(b) $150 a month for married members of the staff whose wives are absent from Hong Kong,

(c) $200 a month for married members of the staff whose wives are re- sident in Hong Kong.

All house allowances cease when members of the staff proceed on long leave.

The payment of allowances during absence House from the Colony other than on long leave e.g. during absence. during the summer vacation, is regulated by a ruling of the University Council that each case must be considered on its merits.

The payment of house allowances during periods of absence from the Colony on sick leave will be treated similarly, i.e. each case will be considered on its merits.
