Copy of a letter received from the Principal of the University of Glasgow, dated 24th June. 1937.

Dear Mr. Brander,

I know D. J.Sloss well. He happens to be a Liverpool graduate and used to spend part of his leaves near Liverpool, so that I saw

a good deal of him on these occasions. But also, as it happens, a

good many of my friends are in the Burma Civil Service, and one of them (no doubt known to you Raibert McDougall) was the Secretary in charge of the Government's dealings with the University of Rango on.

From McDougall and from other sources I heard a good deal about Sloss's

handling of the difficult situation in Rangoon, and know that those

with whom he worked have a very high opinion indeed of his quality

and his performance. I should think he would do extremely well in

Hong Kong. Indeed I think they would be lucky to get anyone of his

capacity and experience. He is strong but considerate and friendly; altogether, by personality and by experience, as good a man as you

are likely to get for the not very easy job of running a University

in an Outpost of Empire.

Yours sincerely,

(Signed) H.J.W. Hetherington
