Mr. Gent.

To see.

As I have already explained to you in person,

Sir William Peel had ascertained from Sir William

Hornell, before the meeting, that Dr. Sloss's age

would be no disqualification. In fact, what Sir

William Hornell was particularly anxious to avoid

was the appointment of a young man who might not be

able to hold his own against some heavy artillery

that might be brought to bear upon the new Vice

Chancellor. We satisfied ourselves at the meeting

that Mr. Sloss had at least five years good work in

him.
