The future is, however, more doubtful as over
$H.K.400,000 of the University's income is derived from
investments, of which two-thirds are in Shanghai and
consist largely of mortgages. The University is at
the moment living from hand to mouth.
Engineering.
It is thought that the University does not
require the elaborate organisation of British and
American Universities, which include research and the
giving of advice to industry. It is proposed that there
should be one Professor of Engineering only and that the
work of the Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering
Faculties should be more closely combined. There is
difficulty in combining practical work in the engineering
shops with academic work proper (see 53728/36 for this
also). Increased co-operation between the University
and engineering firms is desired. It is hinted that it
might be better to provide students with an engineering
degree at an English provincial University rather than
maintain present expenditure on the Faculty, though
there are obvious objections (I think we should strongly
oppose any question of this kind).

Few engineering students return, after
the antenser of the Unversity's inflives graduation, to China. This handicap exists also among
the medical students.
