Various memoranda in criticism of the Report have

been written by members of the staff of the University, but

the Council has rightly refused to consider these apart from

the expected views of the appropriate statutory bodies.

I venture however to forward a copy of a speech made at the

Court meeting of 21st May by the Dean of the Faculty of

Medicine, Professor Ride, in view of its concluding words.

there was no debate on the questions raised in this speech

except that I authorized the circulation of copies, as

requested, to all members of the Court.

I welcome the subsidence which the University

vacation now entails, not least on account of the delicacy of

my own position as Chairman of the Committee in question now

finding myself acting as the University's Pro-Chancellor,

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient, humble servant,

N.L. Smit

Officer Administering the Government.
