Confidential.

In the course of conversation at lunch yesterday Chinese

Ambassador told me in confidence it is a fact that China is

receiving from Russia a certain number of aeroplanes which are

being flown there over Sinkiang and which have been sold to

China on credit. I gathered that some munitions and other

armaments were also being imported from Soviet Union by sea

from Odessa and viâ Indo-China but that apart from this no form

of military assistance was being received from this country.

Addressed to Foreign Office No. 191 November 1st; repeated

to Nanking and Tokyo.
