In accordance with instructions I have conferred
with the Home Office on the subject of the main-
tenance and repair of gasholders and have to report
as follows.

Mr. Birks, Deputy Chief Engineer, Gas Light and
Coke Company, London.
The Gas Administration Department of the Board of
Trade have powers under the Gas Regulation Act 1920
and the Gas Undertakings Acts of 1929 and 1934 to
exercise control of the prices charged and the quality
of the gas supplied by the various undertakings.
The Board of Trade may also appoint Gas Referees who pres-
cribe the nature of the tests that must be carried out
on the gas especially as regards its calorific value.
Restrictions governing the quality of the gas are
contained in Section 10, Gas Undertakings Act 1934
