Attached to this shop is a large machine shop with
a considerable number of lathes and planes but they are
all such as can only produce small parts. The machines
seemed in fair condition though we were informed that
they are all very ol4.
*e were next shown the pumping plant and genera-
ting engine which were the only things we saw in which
it appeared that real reliance could be placed.
In the moulding shed sastings are taken for brass
and other parts but here again it appears that only
Comparatively small things can be dealt with.
Returning to the ferry by trolley it was almost
frighteningly clear that the track was in a deplorable
state. The lines were visibly ereoked and the state
of the sleepers was even more evident than before, It
appears that the eresseted and steel sleepers are only
used in new construction.
I believe I am right in stating that this section
of the railway is in such a deplorable state that
Mr. Calder-Harshall is of the opinion that through
traffic from Canton will be almost unwerkable unless
something is done to rehabilitate the Northera section
of the line.
